Influenced by his wife who knew Idy Hegnauer, Fritz Lampert went to Algeria to join the humanitarian project of Service Civil International (SCI) in 1962. From 1962 till 1968 SCI recruited qualified volunteers in the province of Tlemcen in the western part of Algeria.
As volunteer doctor he was part of a team, who is in charge for the medical service for a large rural area around El Khemis. After the retreat of French authorities the region lacked of medical and other professional staff.
